It’s that time of year again; the time where I scratch my head and wonder where do I start?
Yes, its kitchen spring clean time!
Usually I procrastinate and try to do anything but organise the kitchen, but this year I found a handy guide by kitchen specialists Mayfair Granite to give me a helping hand. Here are their top tips for cleaning and organising your kitchen.
Gather your supplies first
It sounds like a no brainer, but no one wants to stop cleaning half way through and go to the shop because they have run out of supplies, so always check that you have everything before you start. Here is a list of supplies you’ll need:
- Multi-surface cleaner and soapy water
- Multiple dish cloths and sponges
- A broom, dustpan and brush and mop
- Heavy duty floor cleaner
- A small bucket
- Oven cleaner
- Step ladder for reaching those hard to reach places
- Bin bags
Once you have your supplies it is a good idea to do a quick pre-clean to create some space to work in. Remove any clutter and junk that does not belong in the kitchen, wash up any dirty dishes and clear the worktops.
Organising and cleaning the pantry and food cupboards
Start by emptying all of your food, condiments and spices out of the cupboards and place them on the worktop or kitchen table. Check each of the labels to see if they are in date and throw away anything that is past its best. Write a list of everything you throw away so you can replenish them if need be.
Cooking staples such as flour, pasta and sugar should be stored in air-tight containers to keep them fresh and spices should be clearly labelled so that you know what they are.
Once this is done wipe down all of the shelves, cupboard sides and doors with multi-surface cleaner or soapy water and leave to dry. You can then start to put everything back.
Place all like items together such as condiments on one side and spices on the other; this makes them easier to find when you need them. If you have multiples of the same product place the oldest items or those with the least best before date at the front so they are used up first.
Carry on with the above steps for all other cabinets and drawers, making sure to throw out any broken or unusable items as you go. As you go along determine whether or not to rearrange your cupboards to make the kitchen more efficient.
Cleaning the fridge freezer
Remove all of the produce out of the fridge freezer and place them in a cool space ready for organising. Just like with the cupboards check all of the labels and throw away any food that has expired.
Remove all of the shelves and drawers and clean them separately with hot soapy water. Use multi-surface cleaner to wipe down the inside of the fridge making sure to clean in all of the nooks and crannies. Stubborn ice can be removed by chipping it away with plastic utensils.
Place all of the produce back into the fridge freezer, again making sure that like items are together i.e. all vegetables in one drawer. Clean or polish the exterior of the fridge freezer with a suitable cleaner.
Cleaning the Oven
Oven cleaner is the easiest (and quickest) way of cleaning your oven, but always read all of the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure the kitchen is well ventilated before you start.
Remove the shelves for cleaning separately and wipe the inside of the oven with hot soapy water. For burnt on food, use a spoon or blunt blade to remove it and cover the inside with oven cleaner as per the instructions.
Leave the solution to sit for at least 30 minutes then use a medium bristled brush to scrub the interior of the oven. Wash off the excess solution with soapy water, making sure to rinse your cloth regularly to avoid spreading dirt and grease around.
Replace the shelves and wipe down the exterior and hob with multi-surface cleaner.
Worktops and floors
We’re now onto the final phase, the worktops and floors. Remove everything from the worktop and clean with multi-surface cleaner. For shiny surfaces such as quartz or granite glass cleaner can be used to bring back the shine. For natural wooden cabinets furniture polish works well to brighten them up too.
Sweep the floor, getting rid of any debris and spot clean any sticky or stained areas first. Once done, mop the whole floor with some heavy duty floor cleaner.
It’s time to stand back and admire your handy work in your nice clean kitchen.
