Repairing or Replacing Boilers – Which is More Efficient for a More Comfortable Home

In the United Kingdom, the national average cost for a new boiler is nearly £3,000. High-end boilers cost more, although there are boilers that are lower in price. Making the choice depends on your financial capability, personal preferences, the size of your home and your heating requirements. What also matters is that you have a warm and comfortable home. Now that you know the cost of a new boiler, you have to make a decision. Do you replace your boiler with a new unit or will you have your current unit repaired while you save for a replacement?

Consider your boiler’s age

Cost is relative. If your boiler still functions properly and you spend cold days enveloped in comfortable warmth, this means that your boiler works just fine. This could be because you are properly maintaining your boiler, keeping it clean, serviced, and checked regularly. Since a boiler can last for an average of 15 years, consider its age. Anticipate that when you’ve used it for at least 10 years, it is likely to suffer from extreme wear and tear in a few years. You can decide to replace it now because you’ll be spending more for repairs in a few years’ time.

Consider how much you spend on repairs

If you are spending more than necessary for boiler repairs, it might be better to consider buying a new one. While the price of a new boiler is still high, you’ll be saving more because you will not be spending so much on repairs. New boilers also have at least 2 years of warranty cover, so replacement of parts usually will not cost you anything. Modern technologies make new models of boilers more energy efficient and perform better. Also, do keep in mind that it costs less to fix modern boilers than older ones. Availability of parts is another consideration, since it may be more difficult to find parts for older boilers.

Consider your safety

A broken boiler poses a risk to your health and your property. An old boiler may no longer meet the guidelines and laws on boiler operation and safety. You need to consult a professional heating specialist to ensure that your boiler is safe, and in case it is broken, if it could still be repaired safely. A broken boiler produces carbon monoxide, which poses a health risk.

It is inevitable that boilers will breakdown as they near the end of their lifecycle. It is a fact that new boiler costs can be quite high. So, get help making the right decision from experts in the field. They will be able to properly assess the condition of your old boiler and recommend more efficient boilers that will make you more comfortable during cold days because they are better suited to your home.

An Important Comparison between Vinyl and Laminate: What You should Know

If you are looking for the perfect flooring for your home and are torn between two materials (namely vinyl and laminate) and can’t really see the difference between them, you’re not alone. Lots of homeowners have made the mistake of thinking that the two types of flooring are the same – but in fact, there are some vast differences between the two. So what do you need to know about vinyl and laminate? Here’s an important comparison between vinyl and laminate: what you should know.

Vinyl and laminate as flooring

The good news is that vinyl and laminate have a few shared characteristics, such as budget-friendliness (they are a lot less expensive than authentic wood floors), they are easy to maintain, and they are both long-lasting and durable.  But at their core, these two flooring materials have some important differences.

Vinyl, for one, is more waterproof than laminate, and is known primarily as water resistant flooring, as vinyl is usually made from plastic and can withstand major flooding without any permanent damage. Nowadays, you no longer have to deal with a whole ‘sheet’ of vinyl, which makes it difficult to install. You can buy vinyl planks which are much easier to set down, and which you can do yourself.

Laminate, on the other hand, is not completely waterproof; it can be damaged or expand with even minor flooding such as an overflowing bathtub or dishwasher. But for some, laminate exceeds vinyl when it comes to looks, especially since it’s the first type of flooring which was made to look like real wood, although there are now luxury vinyl plank floors which look quite much like wood as well.

Installing the two

Vinyl used to come in sheets, as already mentioned. But today, you have the choice to purchase it in plank form, and good quality vinyl floors can be easily installed due to its click joints where the boards just snap together. Laminate may require an underlayment of foam moisture, although this isn’t too much of a hassle to roll out, and producers have come up with pre-attached underlayment. But laminate is often cut with a circular or hand saw that needs to be fitted with a blade that’s ultra fine.

The solution

The good news is that you can have the best of both worlds; the best qualities of laminate combined with the best qualities of vinyl. Some flooring manufacturers have been able to create unique and high quality flooring materials which not only look like laminate (simulating the look of real wood grains and patterns), but are completely waterproof as well.

Finding the right flooring for the rooms in your home can be a daunting task – but if you know what you want and what you should look for, you should have great flooring in no time at all.

5 Things You Need to Do When You Move House

You’ve got an awful lot of things to remember when you are moving home. Your to-do list probably gets longer by the day and there’s so much to consider from booking your removals service to finding a new school for the kids. Moving is always going to be stressful but it doesn’t have to be chaotic. Being organised, planning in advance, and paying attention to these tips will help you move more smoothly and with the least amount of stress possible.

  1. Choose Moving Day Carefully

Try to avoid moving on a weekend, Friday, or Bank Holiday since this is when removals firms like ManAndVanCheltenham.com are more likely to be busier. Try to time your moving so that you avoid any rush hour traffic if you are moving to a city. Mid-week moves are generally cheaper and less stressful.

  1. Choose a Recommended Removals Firm

You may want to have someone handle the entire move from packing to driving the van, or you may want to save money and arrange a man with a van instead. Whichever option you choose, pick a company that is recommended by others (check for testimonials or ask for examples of past clients) since you are entrusting your belongings to these people. Once you have chosen your man with a van or your removals company, make sure you book as far in advance as possible so that you can secure the ideal moving date for your needs.

  1. Work Out Your Furniture Plan

Take a close look at the floor plan of the new house and decide where your furniture is going to fit. Be realistic and know that if something will not fit you’ll have to donate or sell the item (or put it into storage). Arranging this early means that your unwanted furniture can go to good homes in time for the move.

  1. Notify All the Relevant People

As soon as you know you are moving, start to notify the people who need to know about your move such as doctors, dentists, schools, and local authorities for utilities and council tax. Doing this in advance saves last-minute headaches and possible lost money. You’ll also need to notify the DVLA, your banks, your credit card companies, the HMRC, the TV licensing people, and your family and friends.

  1. Work Through a Checklist

Get a moving checklist from a removals company and work through it as the moving day approaches. Tick off all the essential things to do so that you know you won’t forget anything.  Make sure that you have an essentials box packed that will be the first off the van, including things like tea and coffee, a kettle, toilet paper, and that all-important bottle of bubbly to celebrate your arrival.

Country Interior Designs: Creating the Perfect Blend of Modern and Rustic Styles

We all love the houses and apartments that, regardless of their style, are able to transmit in some way a cosy and warm rustic atmosphere. We are not talking about a 100% country house (which also attracts us very much), but we refer to the mix of the minimalist / modern / simple or classic with a hospitable and attractive rustic touch.

Wood furniture, wickerwork and jute rugs are some of the typical elements that can help give this country finish in your home, as you can find at HolmeLeaCountryInteriors.co.uk. But we believe that without a doubt what most helps this, are the wooden floors with rough and natural finishes.

Being creative

You never want to run out of ideas about great ways to decorate and combine styles, and it’s ideal if you can find inspiration to help you create that perfectly balanced interior, incorporating elements of the modern with the bucolic, which is ideal to transmit a bit of the relaxation of the countryside in your city home!

Mixing materials

We love decoration that creates a bohemian atmosphere, but also incorporates a great combination of different materials and styles. On the one hand, for example, walls and floors of exposed cement are typical of the modern and minimalist trend, and on the other hand we can appreciate rustic wooden furniture and rattan lamps which could belong to a more rustic and relaxed style, of times gone by.

It’s also important to subtly reflect a bit of the essence and personality of the owner, through the use of accessories which have personal meaning; rugs, cushions, ornaments, etc.

Blending urban and rural elements

The first thing that will catch the attention of anyone visiting your home will be the interesting mix of styles that it has. On the one hand, you can include objects, furniture and accessories that make it belong to the contemporary urban trends, and on the other hand you can include a bucolic atmosphere full of colours and countryside materials. The result of this fusion of two styles is really striking and beautiful, and motivates many people to look for new and even more creative ways to decorate.

Creating the tranquility we all crave

In addition, large interiors using wood, white and grey colours, together with the perfect composition of old and modern elements, can fill us with a feeling of rustic charm and countryside tranquility while struggling with our, often, hectic modern lives.

Like any lover of interior design, we are constantly reviewing and exploring new and emerging trends, which can provide us with new ideas and inspiration for new and creative interior designs.

Whether it’s minimalist decoration, black and white environments, or spaces with bohemian character, there are numerous fascinating and wonderfully stunning design trends which can inspire you to create your own unique interior to enjoy for many years to come.

How to protect your furniture when moving out

Photo by Francisco De Legarreta on Unsplash

You’ve called in movers or organized a van or a truck to move your belongings and all you have to do now is prepare your stuff for the actual move. No matter how close or how far you are relocating, it only takes a second – a pothole or sudden change of traffic lights and your mirror could break or your wooden table could get scratched. Also things tend to get lost in moves so this is another reason why protecting your belongings is of crucial importance.

Make a list

In moves, things tend to get misplaced. This is why more important items, especially the small ones, should be accounted for before the move. The same goes for all screws and bolts when dismantling your furniture, as it is so easy to misplace them in a hurry. You should find a way to keep them safe, such as buying plastic bags and taping them to the piece of furniture from which they were taken from. Also don’t forget to label them.

Plan your route

In most moves, shortest routes are usually seen as the best routes, but that might not always be the case. Take everything into consideration, from the actual room the piece is at, all the rooms it has to go through, the road to the new place (maybe the longer road is a safer option), and all possible doors and rooms you will have to move it through. For instance your bed could be moved out of your house in one piece but couldn’t enter your new home. This can save up a lot of your time and effort, as you might realize that your bed should have to be dismantled before the move.

Buy the wrapping material

Though you can use your pillows, previously sealed in plastic bags, to protect your furniture in the moving truck, you should also stock up on bubble wrap, tape, boxes and plastic bags. You should acquire all these before the moving day, but you don’t have to buy all of them. For example you might not need to buy boxes, instead you can ask for some from your friends, at work or in some of your local stores.

Dismantle

Most would like to skip the dismantle part, but experience has taught me to dismantle as much as possible. This is especially important for more fragile or heavier pieces, or pieces that might not fit through all entrances. Moving them around as well as fitting them in the truck will be much easier.

Pack everything

Bubble wrap all of your furniture and seal all of your boxes at least a day before the move. This way you can organize how you will place each piece in the moving van and in what order. This is also a good tip in case you might need some more packing material, so that you have enough time to get some more.

The more fragile pieces, breakable or finished furniture should be extra protected, first bubble wrapped and possibly sealed in a box, and second placed carefully in the moving vehicle and surrounded by pillows to prevent collision with other furniture.

Store what you don’t need

Companies such as SES Melbourne recommend storing some of your possessions if they aren’t needed in your new location, at least for the time being. Set aside the things for storage and choose whether you will move them or should you call in the professionals at a storage company.

Heavy stuff first

After wrapping almost everything you own, it is time to place it all in the van. In the case you can move all things at once, you should start with the heaviest pieces first. Of course, you should place soft belongings like pillows between them as well as between more fragile things.

Safely relocating your furniture from point A to point B is a stressful endeavor. Start early so as to prevent any hiccups along the way. Buy the necessary wrapping materials to protect your possessions. You should also dismantle what can be dismantled and wrap it all up. With a little bit of planning and some bubble wrap and tape, your belongings are sure to be safe and sound at the end of your move.

Know the Best Downlights for Different Purposes

Using LED downlights at home is a good idea. There are different corners of the house where they could look really amazing. For instance, you can use them to modernise the kitchen. The area would look brighter and more beautiful. You can also use them in your living room. The place would be more attractive. Interiors are more stunning. Everything looks more sophisticated.

If used in the bathroom, these lights also look amazing. Your bathroom will look cleaner. You will feel more enticed to enter and bathe. The overall feeling is also relaxing. Given the versatility of LED downlights when used at home, there is no wonder why they are now becoming more popular.

Aside from homes, they are also used for industrial purposes. Those who wish to highlight certain art pieces in a museum use these downlights. They showcase the beauty of the art piece without being too overwhelming. They also help in making sure that the exhibit looks more ethereal. Even though they are just accessories to the entire show, they still help create emotion, and make the area look more exciting.

More reasons for buying downlights

Downlights create a streamlined appearance and also provide enough illumination. The place looks more attractive in their presence. They help produce strong lighting that could be combined to create a generally clear and relaxing ambience.

When it comes to the size of these lights, they vary significantly. There are smaller models that measure only about 50mm while others are as big as 160mm. They have different sizes because they are also used for different reasons. The larger models are for commercial units while the smaller ones could be used at home.

Types of downlights

If you are interested in using them, you need to understand the types, so you will know exactly what to buy. Fixed downlights are the non-adjustable kind. The direction is downward. Global downlights on the other hand have a more flexible centre. They can be tilted in a certain direction. They help in creating a focal point in a room. Eyeball downlights could also be a great choice as they help create complete control of the beam angle.

Regardless of the choice of downlight for home or industrial purposes, you just need to make sure you are buying the right brand from the best store. This guarantees that you get quality lights in the end. You are also assured that they are authentic and will last for a long time. You can check out Aurora Lighting and order these lights online. Compare the models available and look at the specifications before making a final decision.

The Busy Mum’s Guide to Looking Great On The Go

As a busy mum, you’re probably all-too familiar with the pattern that happens after childbirth: at first, you feel miserable. You’re not sleeping and in constant pain, so why on earth would you worry about your looks? But then days and nights start to go by, until months have passed – and you’re still feeling like a frumpy mum. If this story sounds anything like you, then you’re in the right place. This article will teach you all my secrets to looking amazing – even as a mum on the go. After all, you may not be able to do it all as a mum, but you can at least look like you do…

Perfect your five-minute makeup routine

Let’s face it: when you’re busy wrestling toddlers into the car, or when your children are already running ten minutes late for school, makeup might be the last thing on your mind. But in reality, putting on even the most spare bit of makeup will make you feel so much better about yourself. Even if it doesn’t completely transform your appearance from good to great, you’ll experience a boost of confidence from knowing you put in the extra time and effort to take care of yourself this morning. So, instead of collecting hundreds of cheap makeup products, begin to adopt a five-minute makeup routine with a few high-quality products. That way, you can look and feel your best without taking up more of your precious mummy time.

Stop hating your body

After your first pregnancy, your body undoubtedly changes – and it may never go back to the way it was before pregnancy ever again. But we need to remember that that’s okay! Your body may change with mummyhood, but that doesn’t have to launch you into an ugly cycle of self-hatred. Ultimately, your body is perfect just the way it is! However, if you really hate something about yourself so much that it’s clouding your self-confidence, you could consider changing it surgically. After all, nothing is too extreme if it means loving the skin you’re in – just look here to see examples of women whose lives were changed by cosmetic surgery.

Wear your hair in an easy updo

One of the things parents quickly learn is that young children, especially babies and toddlers, love to pull on dangling hair. The time we figure that out is usually the same time we stop doing our hair, and instead begin throwing it into a messy ponytail or bun as soon as we get out of bed in the morning (or wearing the same sloppy style we went to bed in the night before). But just because you’re putting your hair up doesn’t have to mean the same boring hairdo every day! To feel instantly sexier, try shaking it up this week with an easy updo like this simple French roll. This style will still keep your hair away from baby’s grabbing hands, without making you feel like a washed-up mum of four (even if you think you are one…).

Begin your beauty routine at night

We all know how stressful it can be to get the whole family out the door in the morning – but spending your mornings corralling your children doesn’t have to mean compromising your entire beauty routine. By beginning your beauty routine the night before, you save valuable time in the mornings and get to take a little time to yourself at the end of a long, hard night. For example, beginning with a solid nighttime skincare routine helps create a beautiful canvas for your makeup – meaning you won’t need much more than a tinted moisturizer for gorgeous skin in the morning. You can also try setting out your outfits the night before to save yourself from rummaging through your closet for twenty minutes in the morning…only to put on a pair of dirty sweatpants. We’ve all been there, trust me – but it doesn’t have to be this way, I promise!

As you can see, becoming a busy mum on the go doesn’t have to mean forgetting all about your beauty routine. You can still live for your kids while taking care of your appearance and feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin!

How to install a bi-fold door

If you are thinking of making changes to your home, you may be considering adding new patio doors or Windows. One of the most common additions in the last few years in bifold doors, especially at the rear of the properly. They can quickly transform a home, provide copious amounts of additional natural lighting and aluminium bifolding doors also come with the highest levels of security as standard.

Bi-folding doors can easily be installed into homes, maximising the living space and completely opening up the home.

Installation starts with the measurement process of the area you wish to add bi-folding doors and depending on the space a range of 16 different variations might be suggested depending on the size of the opening, the amount of concertinas and the glass panes.

Once this has all been agreed and the doors have been manufactured the frames and glass panels are delivered separate with all installation taking place on site.

Firstly, the door frame is located with the opening in the wall. Whilst this process is occurring, the very bottom of the opening is levelled using packers to ensure the doors sit on a perfectly flat surface. This is essential with a bi-folding door as any irregularities in the height of the opening with prevent the door from concertinaing correctly.

Once the bottom of the frame has been levelled and tested, the sides of the frame are then also packed in a similar way to ensure these are level too. These must be square and can be a time consuming job. If it is however rushed and not perfect, the door will not open or work at all and a costly replacement will have to take place.

Once it has been thoroughly tested and the engineers on site are happy with the surfaces, the next process of drilling into the fixing holes can begin. Care must be taken at this stage to ensure the fittings are all tightened and that the frame does not distort due to any additional added pressure. After the frame has been correctly inserted into the space, specialist equipment is used to install the glass panes, which are nearly always double glazed units.

A weather tight seal must be added using silicone such as Adshed Radcliffe sealants. These are designed for aluminium framing specifically and provide the high quality needed in this scenario. Once this has been completed, the protective tape should be removed to ensure a straight edge when the silicone dries.

Once all this has been completed, a thorough check of the door components including hardware should be undertaken. The door should be tested to ensure it concertinas properly and all keys and locking systems should be tested.

This step by step guide explains how bi-folding aluminium doors are installed in the UK. As you can see it is quite a time consuming process and there are multiple components which must be tested throughout the installation process to ensure everything works correctly. An error early on will mean your bi-folding door does not work.
